Dozens march in Vilnius to mark Europe Day
Around 40 people marched along Vilnius’s Gediminas Avenue on Saturday to mark Europe Day, carrying flags of the European Union, Lithuania, Ukraine, and the historic white-red-white flag of Belarus, LRT reports.
The procession, organised by the European Federalist Movement in Lithuania and Young European Federalists (Ave Europa), began at Independence Square and concluded at Town Hall Square. Participants included members of the Liberal Youth of Lithuania, the Liberal Movement, the Statkevich Forum, and Belarusian opposition representatives.
Students from Kaunas University of Technology’s Engineering Lyceum, the university’s Civil Engineering Faculty, and Saulė Gymnasium also joined the march, alongside Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius.
Europe Day commemorates the 1950 Schuman Declaration, in which French diplomat Robert Schuman proposed uniting French and German coal and steel industries—a foundational step toward the European Union. Lithuania became a full EU member on May 1, 2004.
