Kaunas observation wheel to open this autumn but location still undecided
A 45-metre observation wheel will open in Kaunas this autumn, though the exact location remains under consideration, LRT.lt reports.
Tadas Stankevičius, head of Kaunas In, the city’s economic development and tourism agency, told the outlet that several sites are being evaluated, including Vytauto Park, Nemuno Island, and Aleksotas—all offering panoramic views of the city. A final decision is expected by the end of May.
Stankevičius described the wheel as a “large and complex” structure requiring careful site selection, with infrastructure needs a key factor. While the wheel is designed to be relocatable, he noted that success in its first year would not preclude future moves if needed.
“This isn’t a building with foundations—it’s a mobile installation. Theoretically, we’ll have the option to change its location later depending on circumstances,” he said. “We hope for success from the start but are keeping flexibility for adjustments.”
The €4.6 million (VAT included) project, awarded to Dutch engineering firm SkyView Creation B.V., will feature 32 enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas. Stankevičius dismissed criticism that the wheel is unnecessary, arguing it will enhance Kaunas’ skyline and offer a new vantage point for residents and tourists alike.
He emphasised that tourism growth depends on a range of attractions, citing events at Dariaus and Girėno Stadium and the renovated Kaunas Airport as complementary draws. “The wheel alone won’t multiply tourism fivefold, but it adds another highlight,” he said. “More visitors mean more restaurants and bars, benefiting locals too.”
Construction is on track for a 2024 autumn launch, with the agency aiming to finalise the location within weeks.
