Court receives corruption cases against MPs Martinaitis and Bucevičius over expense fraud

The Šiauliai Regional Prosecutor’s Office has forwarded corruption cases to the Šiauliai Regional Court against two Lithuanian MPs, Tomas Martinaitis and Saulius Bucevičius, both former members of Akmenė District Municipal Council, LRT reports.
The two lawmakers face charges of abuse of office, embezzlement, document forgery, and misuse of official documents. The investigation, led by the Organized Crime and Corruption Division of the Šiauliai Regional Prosecutor’s Office and conducted by the Special Investigations Service (STT), alleges that between 2019 and 2023, while serving as council members, Martinaitis and Bucevičius submitted fraudulent expense reimbursement claims.
Prosecutors state that Martinaitis falsified 50 expense reports, including fuel purchases made with payment cards belonging to other individuals or companies, resulting in the misappropriation of €1,996 in public funds. Bucevičius is accused of 15 similar instances, embezzling €818.
The prosecutor’s office argues that their actions not only caused financial harm to Akmenė District Municipality but also significantly damaged public trust in state institutions.
