Firefighters search over 100 km of Nemunas River for missing person
Firefighters in Lithuania have searched more than 100 kilometres of the Nemunas River in an ongoing operation to locate a person feared to have drowned, state news agency ELTA reports.
The Kaunas Fire and Rescue Department launched the search on Wednesday after receiving a request for assistance from police in Jurbarkas district. Authorities were alerted at 8:54 AM to a possible drowning near Seredžius, a small town on the river.
Rescue teams used a boat to inspect the right bank of the Nemunas from Jurbarkas to Seredžius, covering approximately 43 kilometres. On their return, they also searched the middle of the river. Meanwhile, a separate team from Kaunas examined the left bank from Seredžius to Smalininkai in Šakiai district, spanning around 60 kilometres.
Despite the extensive search, covering a total of over 100 kilometres, the missing individual has not been found. The operation remains ongoing.
