The peat bog fire in Lithuania’s Kupiškis district has been localized as of 9:32 p.m., though firefighting crews and peat workers remain on site, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VPGT) reported on Tuesday.

Overnight operations will focus on constructing water barriers across the entire burned area and maintaining patrols, according to the service. The fire, first reported at 1:23 p.m. on Monday near Bukėnai village, has affected about 15 hectares of the 50-hectare Šepetos peat bog.

Authorities issued a short-range alert within a 15-kilometer radius, warning residents of potential air pollution. Locals have been advised to avoid outdoor activities and keep windows closed. The Environmental Protection Agency has also been notified.

State of emergency declared

Kupiškis district municipality declared a state of emergency across its territory on Tuesday following an emergency session of its crisis operations center. The decision cited wind-driven smoke spread as a key concern.

Wildfire risks persist

Lithuania’s forest fire statistics show 125 fires this year, burning over 44 hectares—down from 99 fires and 66 hectares burned by the same period in 2025. Vilnius and Kaunas regions recorded the highest numbers. April through June typically see the most incidents.

Firefighters warn that dry conditions make forest access difficult for heavy equipment, often requiring water transport over long distances. Over 90% of wildfires result from human negligence, such as discarded cigarettes or improper campfires.

Residents are urged to report fires immediately via emergency number 112 and evacuate upwind if unable to contain flames.
