Lithuanian and Swedish leaders highlight deep historical ties and shared security challenges

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf met on Monday to discuss long-standing bilateral relations, regional security, and geopolitical challenges, the Lithuanian presidency reported.

“Lithuania and Sweden have been bound by close ties since ancient times, which continue to strengthen today,” Nausėda said in a statement, emphasizing the countries’ partnership within the EU, NATO, and the Nordic-Baltic region. He described Sweden as one of Lithuania’s key economic partners and largest investors, with Lithuanian investments in Sweden nearing €500 million and growing.

The meeting also addressed cultural and academic cooperation, including efforts to preserve Lithuanian heritage in Sweden. Nausėda highlighted the role of the 17,000-strong Lithuanian community in Sweden in fostering bilateral relations, as well as joint initiatives such as the Anthropological Video Archive of Swedish Lithuanians and projects funded by the Lithuania-Sweden Cooperation Fund, which supports youth, innovation, culture, and business exchanges.

The leaders noted Lithuania’s upcoming role as guest of honor at the 2028 Gothenburg Book Fair. Nausėda also congratulated the king on his recent 80th birthday, wishing him continued health and success.

During his working visit to Sweden, Nausėda is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to discuss Lithuania’s upcoming EU Council presidency, Baltic Sea security, resilience against hybrid threats, and support for Ukraine.
