Lithuania allocates €80,000 for AI tools to counter disinformation
The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence plans to allocate an additional €80,000 to strengthen the military’s ability to combat disinformation using artificial intelligence (AI) tools, LRT reports.
Funding will support the acquisition of AI-powered software licenses for the Strategic Communications Department of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, aimed at enhancing monitoring and analysis capabilities. Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed the decision, stating that AI would be deployed to match the same tools used by disinformation actors.
“Disinformation is spreading today—we see it in various projects. We all understand that we can fight it with information or other means, including AI, just as those spreading disinformation use it,” Kaunas told parliament. He added that the funding would ensure the military has “equal conditions” in the digital information space.
The State Security Department previously warned of a new wave of information attacks targeting the Baltic states, including fake separatist groups on social media. Such tactics, linked to Russian efforts to destabilise neighbouring countries, have intensified in recent months.
