Lithuania’s emergency siren test shows 98% success rate, faults repaired
Only 2% of Lithuania’s emergency warning sirens failed to activate during a nationwide test on Thursday, marking the system’s best performance to date, the Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD) reported.
Out of 1,164 sirens tested across the country, 2.06% malfunctioned—down from 2.6% in December 2025 and 5.4% in the prior check. All faulty units will undergo technical inspections, with repairs carried out promptly, PAGD stated in a release carried by LRT.
“Consistent testing allows us to systematically improve the system’s reliability,” the department noted. Residents are encouraged to complete a survey on their experience with the alert system, including whether they heard sirens or received mobile notifications. The feedback helps assess real-world performance.
Regular tests ensure the system’s readiness for actual threats, while also reminding the public to review emergency preparedness: checking phone alert settings, updating evacuation kits, and discussing family response plans. Currently, sirens cover about 69% of Lithuania’s population, with expansion underway to reach 75% by 2029 through new installations, upgrades, and centralised control improvements.
