Conservative leader responds to Landsbergis criticism: party firmly moving right

The leader of Lithuania’s Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), Laurynas Kasčiūnas, has rejected former party chairman Gabrielius Landsbergis’ claim that the party’s direction is unclear, stating that TS-LKD is “firmly moving to the right,” LRT reports.

Kasčiūnas emphasised that the party’s shift reflects a return to its roots, particularly on issues such as migration, state language protection, and preserving Lithuania’s cultural and social cohesion. “We are returning to the principles of Sąjūdis [Lithuania’s independence movement], firmly safeguarding our state’s cultural and social fabric,” he said.

The current chairman attributed the visible changes to new leadership, stating that his election campaign had promised to strengthen the party’s traditional priorities. “My vision is to protect what we’ve achieved and reinforce areas where we can be stronger,” Kasčiūnas said. He also highlighted increased engagement across Lithuania, moving beyond a “Vilnius-centric” approach to connect with regional communities.

Kasčiūnas expressed confusion over Landsbergis’ decision to voice his criticism publicly rather than in private discussion. “I’d have picked up the phone and called—if there are good ideas on how to improve something, I’d give advice in conversation,” he said.

Landsbergis, who led TS-LKD from 2015 to 2024 and served as foreign minister, stepped down as party chairman after the 2024 parliamentary elections. Kasčiūnas was elected to replace him in early 2025.
