Lithuanian PM calls prosecutor’s request to strip Paluckas of immunity “normal and reasonable”

Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė has described the prosecutor general’s request to revoke former prime minister Gintautas Paluckas’ legal immunity as “normal and reasonable,” state broadcaster LRT reports.

Ruginienė stated that if the prosecutor general sees grounds to lift Paluckas’ immunity, politicians should not obstruct the process. She noted that Paluckas himself had pledged not to hinder the investigation and would waive his immunity—a move she called “a good step.”

“The investigation will answer all questions,” Ruginienė said. “I’m no expert, but the sum [involved] is substantial. I truly hope the probe won’t drag on and will soon provide answers—not just for the public and media, but for law enforcement as well.”

Asked whether Paluckas should resign his parliamentary seat, the prime minister said that decision rested with him alone.

The prosecutor general’s office has requested the removal of Paluckas’ immunity to press charges of unlawful enrichment, alleging that he and his wife may have illegally acquired assets worth nearly €344,578.
