Lithuanian environmental inspectors uncover dozens of manure and slurry management violations

Lithuania’s Environmental Protection Department (AAD) has identified dozens of violations in manure and slurry handling during 70 inspections conducted nationwide this spring, state news agency ELTA reported on Sunday.

Inspectors checked 63 legal entities, uncovering 10 violations, and examined 105 individuals, with 33 found in breach of regulations. The most common offences involved failures to comply with storage, accounting, and fertilisation requirements for manure and slurry.

Environmental authorities warn that improper management of manure and slurry can contaminate soil, surface water, groundwater, and even residential wells. Regulations strictly prohibit spreading manure or slurry on frozen, waterlogged, snow-covered, or saturated soil at any time of year.

Fines for violations range up to €230 for individuals and €430 for responsible parties such as business operators. Repeat offences may result in higher penalties—up to €430 for individuals and €1,100 for legal entities.
