Lithuanian and German soldiers train in river crossing operations

Lithuanian and German troops have completed a three-day joint exercise focused on selecting river crossing sites along the Nemunas and Neris rivers, the Lithuanian Armed Forces reported Tuesday.

The training involved German military engineers and soldiers from Lithuania’s Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion’s newly reestablished Crossing Company. Theoretical sessions covered river crossing procedures, operational planning, and best practices for developing the unit’s capabilities, according to the Lithuanian military.

During field exercises, troops conducted reconnaissance along the Nemunas and Neris, simulating tactical scenarios to identify optimal crossing points and methods. They also assessed technical factors for deploying self-propelled amphibious M3 systems or pontoon bridges.

Oleg Grošev, head of the battalion’s combat training section, called the joint drills “highly valuable” for rebuilding Lithuania’s river-crossing capacity. “Operations across wide water barriers are among the most complex,” he stated, emphasizing the need to evaluate enemy surveillance, friendly unit concealment, approach routes, and timing to ensure maneuverability under any conditions.

The Crossing Company, officially reactivated in mid-April, is tasked with transporting personnel, equipment, and supplies across water obstacles, constructing logistical bridges, scouting routes, and performing underwater engineering work.
