Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has expressed support for a parliamentary proposal to allow single women to access assisted reproduction services if medically diagnosed with infertility, LRT reports.

“If this is about treating an illness, then illness must be treated,” Nausėda’s advisor Vaidas Augustinavičius told Žinių Radijas on Tuesday. He clarified that while family policy should promote traditional values, “assisted reproduction is solely about medical treatment.”

The president’s stance aligns with a government-drafted bill currently under debate in the Seimas, which would regulate assisted reproduction for single women and unmarried couples when medical indications exist. Under the proposal, procedures would require approval from a medical board in cases where infertility cannot be cured by other means or where pregnancy risks severe health complications.

Health Ministry data shows that under the current system—restricted to married couples—around 2,800 children have been born via assisted reproduction in Lithuania between 2018 and 2024. The Constitutional Court previously ruled the existing framework unconstitutional, though the ministry has permitted clinics to continue services pending new legislation.
