Five Lithuanian villages have been chosen to represent the country in the Best Tourism Villages competition organised by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Ministry of Economy and Innovation announced on Wednesday.

Niūronys (Anykščiai district), Žagarė (Joniškis district), Meteliai (Lazdijai district), Kaltanėnai (Švenčionys district), and Žeimelis (Pakruojis district) will submit their applications to the international contest, selected from 11 candidates proposed by municipalities and tourism centres. The competition evaluates rural destinations that demonstrate sustainable tourism development, cultural preservation, and strong community engagement.

Guoda Burokienė, vice-minister of economy and innovation, stated that Lithuania’s entries stand out for their “authentic culture, preserved traditions, and proactive local communities,” offering an opportunity to showcase the country’s regional strengths on a global stage. “This competition allows our regions to assess their tourism potential against the highest international standards and gain visibility worldwide,” she said.

The UNWTO initiative aims to reduce regional disparities, boost local competitiveness, and promote responsible tourism. Eligible locations must have fewer than 15,000 residents and demonstrate unique landscapes, traditional economic activities, and community-led projects. An international jury will assess sustainability, infrastructure, marketing strategies, and collaboration efforts, with preference given to sites recognised for cultural or natural heritage.

Winners, to be announced in autumn 2026, will join the UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages Network, gaining access to knowledge-sharing platforms, capacity-building programs, and international partnerships.
