Lithuania acquires Swedish Giraffe X1 radar systems to strengthen air defence
Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence has purchased additional next-generation Giraffe X1 radar systems from Swedish manufacturer Saab Dynamics, state broadcaster LRT reported on Thursday.
Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas stated the acquisition aligns with efforts to bolster Lithuania’s air defence capabilities, drawing on lessons from the ongoing war in Ukraine. “The Giraffe X1 radar system is mobile, rapidly deployable, and effectively detects small objects with 360-degree coverage and 3D tracking,” Kaunas said in a ministry statement.
The system is designed to integrate seamlessly with other defence platforms and is resistant to electronic interference, the ministry added. Its compact, lightweight design allows for flexible use in both military operations and critical infrastructure protection.
According to specifications, the radar provides full situational awareness, precisely determining an object’s altitude, direction, and speed. It remains operational even under complex electronic warfare conditions, maintaining performance despite jamming or deception attempts.
