Prosecutor seeks €5,000 fine for woman accused of defaming Meškuičiai elder
A prosecutor has proposed a €5,000 fine for Irma Gajauskaitė, who stands accused of defaming Meškuičiai elder Jolanta Baškienė, LRT reports. The Šiauliai District Court concluded hearings in the case on Thursday, with a verdict expected on May 14.
Gajauskaitė is charged with spreading false and defamatory claims about Baškienė on social media in April 2025, alleging the elder had illegally seized land and killed her dog and cat. Throughout pre-trial investigations and court proceedings, Gajauskaitė denied wrongdoing, acknowledging the factual circumstances but insisting her statements reflected personal opinion rather than slander.
The prosecutor argued that Gajauskaitė’s remarks were clearly degrading, damaging Baškienė’s reputation as a public servant. The accused left the courtroom before delivering closing remarks, stating she had “already said everything.”
Baškienė, the injured party, expressed trust in the justice system and called for Gajauskaitė to be held accountable.
