Lithuanian parliament appoints Aleksandras Radčenko as new Seimas controller

The Lithuanian Seimas on Thursday approved Aleksandras Radčenko, a legal advisor to the prime minister, as the country’s third Seimas controller, LRT reports. The vote saw 75 lawmakers in favour, three against, and three abstentions.

Radčenko, who holds a law degree, previously served as an advisor to Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas and former Seimas Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, as well as to President Gitanas Nausėda’s Legal Group. His career includes roles in the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economy, and as deputy director of the Government Chancellery’s Law Department.

During his presentation to parliament, Radčenko stated that supporting small and medium-sized businesses would be his priority. He emphasised his political independence, noting his experience working with leaders of differing political views. “My work with state leaders of various political orientations shows I have no ties to any single party,” he said.

The position of Seimas controller, reinstated in 2014, is tasked with investigating complaints related to potential misconduct in public services affecting small and medium enterprises. Controllers serve five-year terms; Radčenko joins Erika Leonaitė and Jolita Miliuvienė in the role.

Social Democrat Karolis Podolskis backed Radčenko’s candidacy, citing his experience and commitment to addressing small business issues. Conservative Jurgis Razma opposed the institution’s focus on such matters but not Radčenko personally, while Audronis Ažubalis criticised Radčenko’s support for trilingualism. Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas, who nominated Radčenko, highlighted his long-standing expertise in legislation, public administration, and human rights.

Radčenko was also one of the founders of the Polish Discussion Club established in Vilnius in 2014.
