Lithuanian court to rule whether discounted pickle advertisement was covert political campaigning

A Lithuanian regional administrative court will announce on Wednesday whether a supermarket discount promotion for “Geras vaizdelis” (“Good Image”) pickles during last year’s parliamentary elections constituted hidden political advertising, LRT reports, citing BNS.

The Central Electoral Commission (VRK) ruled in May 2025 that the campaign—run by three major retail chains offering discounts on pickles produced by the Kėdainiai Canning Factory—amounted to indirect political promotion for the Taika (Peace) coalition, which used the slogan “Geras vaizdelis visiems” (“A good image for everyone”) in its election campaign.

The VRK concluded that the promotion exceeded commercial intent, instead manipulating public opinion and indirectly supporting the coalition. The commission dismissed claims by the retailers—”Lidl Lietuva,” “Iki Lietuva,” and “Maxima LT”—that the timing was coincidental, noting the historical ties between the pickle brand and former politician Viktoras Uspaskich, a co-founder of the Taika coalition.

The Kėdainiai Canning Factory, owned by Uspaskich’s company Vikondai, introduced the “Geras vaizdelis” pickles in 2001, featuring Uspaskich’s image and that of a satirical character, V. Agurkichas, on the labels. The slogan was trademarked in 2002. The VRK also highlighted past discussions in the Seimas Ethics Committee regarding potential conflicts of interest linked to the product.

The Taika coalition ultimately received 2.2% of the vote in the elections, failing to secure parliamentary seats. The canning factory, retailers, and Uspaskich have challenged the VRK’s decision in court, arguing for its annulment.
