Lithuanian president plans to appoint non-partisan candidate to public broadcaster’s council

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda will propose a candidate unaffiliated with any political party to fill a vacancy on the governing council of the national broadcaster LRT, *Verslo žinios* and LRT reported on Monday.

Speaking to journalists, Nausėda said he intends to select someone “not linked to political parties,” preferably with a background in law, jurisprudence, or political science. “These should be individuals whose allegiance to any political force cannot be questioned,” he stated.

The president added that he expects a competitive selection process, with multiple candidates presented for his consideration. “I believe we will have the opportunity to maintain certain procedures. I would like this to be a selection where several candidates are proposed, and I can choose from them,” Nausėda said.

The vacancy follows the resignation of Giedrius Jucevičius, a presidential appointee to the LRT council since 2024, whose term was originally set to expire in May 2030. His departure was announced earlier this month.
