German media reports surge in inquiries about service in Lithuania-based brigade
German media outlets report a significant increase in inquiries from soldiers interested in serving with the German 45th Armoured Brigade in Lithuania, despite ongoing recruitment challenges, LRT.lt writes.
According to Table.Briefings, a German news portal, the brigade—planned to reach 5,000 troops by late 2027—faces difficulties filling key units. As of February, only 197 of the 414 required soldiers had volunteered for the 203rd Tank Battalion, set to relocate from Augustdorf. Similarly, the 122nd Grenadier-Tank Battalion, needing 640 personnel, had just 181 applicants. For new main forces—artillery, intelligence, engineering, and logistics units requiring 1,971 soldiers—only 209 (10% of the target) had signed up.
A major hurdle is the lower appeal of Rūdninkai barracks for junior ranks compared to Vilnius and Kaunas for higher-ranking officers and families. “The Vilnius phase will soon end, and the incentives are more attractive for families than for young recruits,” an unnamed soldier told Table.Briefings.
To address shortages, the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) and Defence Ministry have launched outreach efforts, including informational letters, familiarisation trips to Lithuania, and reducing the mandatory service period from two years to one. The report notes a recent rise in inquiries, though some officials privately suggest conscription may be imposed if voluntary recruitment falls short.
Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence (KAM) maintains that the brigade’s deployment remains on schedule, with over 1,700 German troops already stationed under its banner. Berlin aims to fully deploy 4,000–5,000 soldiers by late 2027, while Lithuania commits to preparing necessary infrastructure.
