Lithuanian PM Ruginienė says no doubts exist over NATO’s strength

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė has reiterated that there should be no doubts about NATO’s strength, despite ongoing discussions over the country’s defence contingency plans, LRT reports.

Speaking after a government meeting on Tuesday, Ruginienė declined to specify the details of previously mentioned “Plan A, B, and C” for national security, stating that defence strategies must remain adaptable to a rapidly changing environment. “We must focus on serious work rather than literary genres,” she said, referring to opposition demands for clarity.

The prime minister emphasised that Lithuania’s defence planning is fully integrated into NATO’s framework, covering regional and national levels. “Plans cannot be set in stone—they must evolve alongside the situation,” she said, adding that any country leaving NATO would not weaken the alliance.

Ruginienė also noted accelerated procurement of military equipment and called for faster implementation of long-term defence measures. “Europe will only be strong if all nations equally commit to a shared defence strategy,” she said.

Her comments follow criticism from the Seimas National Security and Defence Committee, whose deputy chair, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, said the government had failed to outline its contingency plans during a closed session.
