Nearly 1,100 young people choose voluntary military service in Lithuania this year
The Lithuanian Armed Forces report that nearly 1,100 individuals without prior military training have applied to begin service in the first quarter of this year, according to a Tuesday announcement by public broadcaster LRT.
Over 43% opted for voluntary non-permanent military service, while more than 33% chose to fulfil their mandatory initial military service on a voluntary basis before conscription. Nearly 24% enrolled in the basic non-commissioned officer (NCO) training course.
The military emphasises that flexible service options allow recruits to balance civilian life with military preparation, tailoring commitments to personal circumstances. The basic NCO course lasts 12 days, followed by periodic weekend training. Voluntary non-permanent service includes a three-week basic course and 20–50 days of annual drills focusing on shooting, tactics, communications, and field operations.
Mandatory initial service lasts nine months (three months for those with relevant specialisations) and covers physical training, weapons handling, and field exercises. Financial compensation is provided for each training day, with additional reimbursements for service-related expenses.
Alternative pathways include officer training at the Lithuanian Military Academy or the Junior Officer Programme.
