Lithuanian Greens and Farmers Union names election campaign chief and 13 mayoral candidates

The Lithuanian Greens and Farmers Union (LVŽS) has appointed MP Ligita Girskienė to lead its municipal election campaign, while party branches have proposed 13 candidates for mayoral posts across 12 municipalities, LRT reports.

Girskienė, who also stands as the party’s candidate for mayor of Klaipėda, will oversee the union’s strategy ahead of the 2027 spring local elections. Party leader Aurelijus Veryga confirmed the decision following a council meeting on Friday, noting that mayoral candidates for Vilnius and Kaunas have yet to be selected.

According to Kristina Kirslienė, LVŽS deputy chair, the party’s regional branches have nominated single candidates in 11 municipalities—Alytus, Elektrėnai, Kupiškis, Pasvalys, Prienai, Raseiniai, Skuodas, Šakiai, Utena, and Visaginas—as well as in the resort town of Palanga, where either Darius Kubilius or Martyna Miklovienė will run. Incumbent mayors Stasys Gutautas (Skuodas), Raimundas Januševičius (Šakiai), Erlandas Galaguzas (Visaginas), and Arvydas Nekrošius (Raseiniai) will seek re-election.

Veryga urged all branches to finalise their mayoral candidates by summer, stating that announcements would follow once decisions are made. The municipal elections are scheduled for spring 2027.
