The Lithuanian telecommunications company Bitė Lietuva has warned customers about a rise in fraudulent SMS messages sent by remote scammers falsely using the company’s name, state broadcaster LRT reports.

Scammers are sending malicious text messages while posing as Bitė, the company’s mobile network systems director Egidijus Smilgys said in a statement on Thursday. He urged customers to remain vigilant and carefully assess any unexpected SMS or calls they receive.

The company stressed that its employees never contact clients in Russian or request sensitive data such as online banking logins or other system credentials. Recipients of suspicious messages are advised to end communication immediately and report the scammer’s phone number to police or the National Cyber Security Centre.

Even if a message appears to come from a trusted contact, Bitė recommends scrutinising its content and any included links. Customers should avoid opening questionable links, making hasty payments, or sharing personal information.

According to the company, around 2,000 fraudulent SMS messages from remote scammers are blocked daily on its network. In the first three months of this year, Bitė blocked approximately 178,000 such messages.
