A fire that broke out at the Zabieliškis landfill in Lithuania’s Kėdainiai district on Monday has been fully extinguished, emergency services reported.

The blaze was first reported at 11:31 AM, prompting a response from Kėdainiai’s fire and rescue teams, according to the Emergency Response Centre. Kaunas emergency medical services were also alerted. Seven fire trucks and a command vehicle were deployed to the scene, supported by a bulldozer from the landfill operator and environmental specialists.

Preliminary reports indicated the fire covered roughly 30 square metres, primarily burning mixed waste including plastic and paper. Authorities confirmed the fire was contained by early afternoon, with firefighting efforts continuing until full extinguishment was declared at 1:00 PM. Water supply was secured from an open source.

Local officials stressed there was no threat to nearby residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Zabieliškis landfill is operated by the Kaunas Regional Waste Management Centre. A similar incident occurred last autumn, when an improperly disposed battery was suspected of igniting construction materials.
