The Lithuanian government has approved the transfer of five municipal properties in Vilnius to Vilnius University (VU), enabling long-term academic and cultural development, LRT reports.

The properties—located on Ašmenos, Vokiečių, and Čiurlionio streets—will support research, education, and public engagement. The Ašmenos Street building, currently housing cultural organisations, and the Institute of International Relations and Political Science on Vokiečių Street will continue their academic and administrative functions. University officials stated that existing lease agreements did not provide sufficient legal guarantees for uninterrupted use.

Three additional sites on Čiurlionio Street—an administrative building, a shooting training centre, and a public restroom—will be repurposed for the VU Botanical Garden to upgrade its Vingis Park facilities, enhancing visitor access and educational programmes.

The government’s decision grants Vilnius University a 99-year trustee right to manage the properties, valued at a residual €4.7 million. The transfer aligns with broader plans to consolidate university infrastructure in the capital’s historic centre.

Separately, the Cabinet also approved the transfer of a Didlaukio Street dormitory from Vilnius College to the municipal housing fund. The city plans to renovate the building to expand affordable housing for specialists in high-demand professions.
