drone incident, lithuania, Varėna district

Lithuanian police have completed their inspection of a suspected drone crash site near Lake Lavyso in the Varėna district, lifting the emergency response plan “Skydas” (Shield) on Tuesday evening, state news agency ELTA reports.

Ramūnas Matonis, a representative of the Police Department, confirmed that debris collection concluded at 16:45 local time, allowing authorities to reopen the area. “The site has been cleared, and the ‘Skydas’ plan has been deactivated,” the police statement read. Recovery teams had earlier retrieved fragments from both the ice and the lakebed, using specialised equipment including underwater cameras and boats provided by Vilnius-based rescue units.

The operation involved 13 officers from the State Fire and Rescue Service, who assisted the Anti-Terrorist Operations Unit “Aras” in searching for and collecting debris under police supervision. Firefighters deployed two boats and underwater drones to scan the lake, while divers from Vilnius contributed additional technical support.

Local officials reported no disruption to residents. Varėna’s deputy mayor Alvydas Verbickas noted that only four people live permanently near the lake, with no requests for assistance received. The remote site, surrounded by the Dainava Forest, lies 10 km southwest of Varėna and is primarily used for seasonal recreation.

The incident began late Monday when an unidentified drone, believed to be of Ukrainian origin, crashed near the lake following what Ukrainian sources described as an operational error during a mission against Russian targets. Lithuanian radar systems did not detect the intrusion; authorities were alerted by reports of an explosion and metallic debris on the ice. No explosives were found at the scene, though investigators have not ruled out their presence.

The emergency response was triggered after a call to the national help centre at 11:52 AM Monday. The “Skydas” plan—Lithuania’s protocol for high-risk security incidents—was activated shortly afterward, mobilising police and rescue teams to secure the area overnight.

Further analysis of the debris and incident circumstances remains underway by relevant institutions.
