Vladislavas Kondratovičius does not rule out candidacy for Vilnius district mayor
Vilnius, Lithuania — Lithuania’s Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovičius has not ruled out running for mayor of Vilnius District in next year’s municipal elections, though he says it is still early to decide.
His potential candidacy is being considered by the local branch of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), which proposed him alongside current mayor Robertas Duchnevičius and municipal administration director Vytautas Vansavičius as possible candidates earlier this month.
“This is an initiative from the local party branch. I’ll look into it—it’s still early,” Kondratovičius told BNS when asked if he would accept a nomination. “I am a municipal official, and if I am valued here, that’s good. But I still believe Robertas [Duchnevičius] is the candidate who should run. However, I welcome the internal party discussions,” he added.
Pressed further on his position, the minister replied only, “Who knows how things will turn out.”
Kondratovičius joined the LSDP after the 2024 parliamentary elections, when he was offered the post of interior minister. Prior to that, he served for a year and a half as director of the Vilnius District Municipality administration.
The LSDP’s Vilnius District branch is expected to make a final decision on its mayoral candidate in the autumn. Municipal and mayoral elections in Lithuania are scheduled for spring 2027.
Current mayor Duchnevičius was elected in 2023, defeating Waldemar Urban of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Union alliance in the runoff.
